Camellia Forest Nursery is a little known resource in the area.  They are about 7 miles west of Carrboro on route 54.  Their exact address is 9701 Carrie Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.  The proprietors are Kai Mei and David Parks who will give you a tour of their greenhouses.  Their e-mail is camforest@aol.com and their website is at http://www.camforest.com.  Most of their sales are nationwide by telephone orders but you can go and see their plant materials first hand.  Call (919)968-0504.
The plants selected in this list are slow growing.  They will give you years of enjoyment and will avoid the problem of having to prune agressively tall shrubs in front of your courtyard walls.  Nothing more repulsive than a holly sprouting from an elephants foot.  Avoid buying a plant without being specific.  Consult with the nursery person to get the exact plant.  We will all have to suffer the consequences of poor plant choices and placement.
Make a plan.  Put the tallest materials in the back and nearest to the gate, but at least 3 feet away from the wall.  Shrubs and perennials come next adding intense color and fragrance in season.  Most in the above list are also evergreens.  Go easy.  Select just 4 to 6 permanent features.  Plant them and see how they do.  You can add annuals in front for that touch of summer color.  Keep your pallette simple and select just two colors and complementary ones at that.  Fill the bed with just your two selections.  Keep it simple.
